  HAUNTED CORN MAZE INFORMATION PAGE

The History of the Haunted Corn Maze

In August of 2005 the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department was approached by the owners of
Darden's Country Store (Tommy & Dee Dee Darden) with a concept for a fundraiser for the organization.
They had a 2 acre field that they had cut a maze into and they were charging admission during the daytime and
thought that it would be great if one of the local volunteer organizations could take over the maze at night and scare
people. We accepted the challenge, and in just two months we put together the first haunted corn maze.
The original maze had 14 events and over 30 actors and support staff. See the 2005 Photos Here.
This year the SVFD is designing the maze and it has been expanded to 7 acres.

WEEKEND RAIN CANCELS MAZE AGAIN

October 27th 2006 - The maze has once again fell victim to the wrath of mother nature. Two inches of rain have once again flooded the field shutting down the maze for the weekend. Right now there is a consideration that the maze will be extended one final weekend. Check back to see what happens.

Haunted Maze Rained Out for Friday Night

October 20th 2006 - Rain once again washed out all chances to open Friday night. SVFD members are currently in the process of pumping out water from the field and we have high hopes of opening the maze for Saturday Night.

Haunted Maze to Kickoff this weekend...
Rain or shine!

October 18th 2006 - After cleaning up from the flooding from October 7th's Nor'easter, the 50 House will be kicking off our October Fundraiser this weekend. We're expecting a huge crowd this year due to the cancellation of the first weekend, so make sure you come out early to get your tickets!!!

Opening Weekend Cancelled

October 10th 2006 - Due to the amount of rain the area received over the weekend, the opening weekend for the Haunted Corn Maze has been cancelled. The maze WILL BE OPEN on all of the remaining weekends!!! Due to this weekend being closed, the operating hours of the maze have been extended.

NEW MAZE HOURS:

7PM - 11PM!!!

Corn Maze Survives Over 14 Inches of Rain

October 8th 2006 - In light of the events of yesterday, the maze seemed to fair pretty well. AS OF TODAY, THE MAZE WILL OPEN ON SCHEDULE on FRIDAY THE 13th.

Press Demo Friday Night Cancelled

October 6th 2006 - It seems that we just can't get a break from the weather. The current "Nor'easter" stalled over the region has washed out the press demo for this evening. We are still optimistic that everything will be dried out for the official opening night on Friday the 13th. Luckily, WTKR was on tour in the area and stopped by and did a feature on the maze before the storm hit. WAVY stopped by during the week and our Deputy Chief gave them a tour of the maze as well.

Gearing up for Opening Night

September 28th 2006 - Props are being built and finishing touches are being put on the events for the 2006 Haunted Corn Maze. ONLY THREE WEEKS LEFT UNTIL OPENING NIGHT!!!

Section of Maze Dedicated to Ernesto

September 9th 2006 - More work done on the maze today. Clean-up from T.S. Ernesto took up most of the day with SVFD members clearing paths and resetting knocked over corn. Damage from the storm was so bad near the entrance section of the maze that we decided to dedicate that portion of the maze to the storm. Only two 50 x 50 sections of the maze were blown over.  The official opening day of the Daytime corn maze has been moved to September 15.

Ernesto Damage to Corn Maze Minimal

September 1st 2006 - Tropical Storm Ernesto Ripped through Isle of Wight County
causing numerous problems. Thankfully the maze survived the wrath of the storm. After the maze dries out, it should open to the general public.

Corn Maze to Open on Schedule!

August 20th 2006 - We are proud to announce that the corn maze has been completed and will open to the general public on Labor Day Weekend. The haunted corn maze is also back on schedule and the focus will now shift to material procurement, prop design and event planning.

Rain Causes Minor Setback

July 19th 2006 - Work has ground to a halt on the maze, with the large amounts of rain over the past two weeks. Cutting should finish in the next few weeks. We are, however, pleased to announce that the corn is over 8 feet tall and close to 10 feet in certain spots!

Day 2 of Cutting on the Corn Maze

July 4th 2006 - Another 4 hours was spent today on the left half of the maze and station 50 members made a lot of progress today. The maze is 70% completed at this time and should be completely cut by July 8th!

Day 1 of Cutting Begins on Corn Maze!

July 2nd 2006 - The SVFD corn maze is starting to take shape. SVFD members spent 13 hours in 90 degree heat to start cutting out the paths that will make our largest 2006 fundraiser. Click on the picture to see the photos.
