ON DUTY MEMBERS SAVE LITTER OF KITTENS

By Firefighter Justin Balius
April 29, 2013

At 2230 a concerned citizen stopped by Station 50 the informed the members there of kittens that where stuck under a sign nearby. The mother had apparently been struck by a car a few days before. With tools and flashlights in hand the 5 members of Station 50 went to work. Five 3 week old kittens, with one barely breathing, were pulled from underneth the sign. They all appeared to be cold and hungry. After a quick phone call to Food Lion we were able to go buy formula and bottles as they getting ready to leave for the night. Lt. Saunders took over care of worst off kitten, none of us thinking he would make it through the night. In the mean time Chief Stallings and myself (FF Balius) began feeding and warming the other kittens. A call was made to animal control to assume emergency care of the kittens for the night. After almost 3 hours after finding them in the early hours of the morning, the kittens were turned over to animal control. As an example of our extreme dedication to even the smallest of victims, all the kittens were doing well at the time of pickup.
