April 18, 2020

Yesterday evening at 1801, Station 50 was alerted to a large area of brush burning on Waterworks Rd just prior to Magnet Rd. 509 (Capt. Hassell) in service as Battalion 1 arrived on scene and reported approximately 2 acres of heavily wooded area burning and moving deeper into the woods under windy conditions. Command was established by 502 (Deputy Chief Gray), Operations was assigned to 506 (Asst. Chief Stallings), and Water Supply Ops was assigned to 504 (Asst. Chief J. Smith). Multiple brush trucks and ground crews were used to contain the fire to 15 acres and a draft site from a nearby pond was put in place for water supply. Crews battled heavy fire conditions for approximately 2 hours, and the fire was placed under control at 1957. All fire agencies in Isle of Wight County played a role in this large scale incident along with units from Surry County, Suffolk Fire/Rescue and Virginia Department of Forestry. Over 18 pieces of firefighting apparatus were used and over 50 firefighters responded to the incident.

Units that responded include:
Smithfield: Brush 50, Engine 51, Engine 52 and Engine 53
Carrollton: Brush 10, Tanker 10
Carrsville: Brush 20

Isle of Wight Rescue Squad: Rehab 60
Surry County: Brush 56, 57, Tanker 54
