At 11:27 Station 50 was dispatched to a 1st due residential structure fire at 609 Hillcrest Dr. Engine 51 and Truck 50 both responded with multiple calls of a residence on fire. Engine 51 arrived first finding a single story residential structure with heavy smoke showing from all sides and fire showing in the rear. Truck 50 circled the block to nose into Engine 51. Chief 501 (Stallings) arrived assuming command of the scene. Engine 51 stretched a line through the front door but where met with a heavy fire load and poor visibility. Truck 50 entered the structure and preformed a search of the accessible space in the the structure before exiting to preform vertical ventilation. Once on the roof crews experiences zero visibility, equipment failure, and multiple levels of roof on top of one another. Crews were eventually pulled from the structure due to eminent roof collapse and switched to a exterior attack. The fire was knocked down and crews re-entered for overhaul. A state investigator was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. In all crews from Station 50, 60, 10, and Suffolk Station 9 worked for approximately 4 hours. Station 40 was called to backfill Station 50 during the event.
