County-Wide
Water Rescue Class
June 7th 2008
-
The County held it's second water
rescue class this weekend. We had all five county fire departments
represented for a total of 24 newly trained water rescue personnel. The
class was taught by Spec Rescue International out of VA Beach. The 20
hours of training consisted of 4 classroom hours and 16 hours of intensive water
and land based practical exercises. Each county fire department has one
16' Rescue One connector Series boat with Sta. 50 having 2 16' Zodiac's also. So
now Isle of Wight County has a total of 50 trained water rescue personnel to
serve the citizens. This entire program came to a head after the
nor'easter of Sep. of 06 when there were multiple calls for assistance in our
county with the members of Smithfield making 23 rescues during the height of the
storm. Photos courtesy of David Sawyer.
