The Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department is always seeking highly motivated and dedicated individuals looking to make a difference. Become a part of our team today. We offer the following levels of membership:

Full Member – This category is for individuals that live in the Smithfield Fire run district. No prior training is required as the department will provide training for you. Our Full Members are required to maintain active membership status by obtaining a certain amount of Duty Hours and Call Responses. They are also required to participate in Monthly Meetings and Training.

Associate Member – This category is for individuals that live outside the Smithfield Fire run district. These members must be certified for Firefighter I & II, Hazmat Operations and hold a valid AHA Healthcare Provider or equivalent CPR certification in order to apply. These members are required to obtain 24 hours of duty per calendar month to maintain status.

Junior Member – These members are the future firefighters of our department. They are at least 16 years of age, posses a valid government issued ID and must conform to all the requirements of the full member.

Support Services – These members provide support services to Full and Associate members for various activities but do not actively participate directly in fire ground operations. Some examples of Support Services functions are: Fire Prevention, Public Relations, Event Support, Fundraising and Assistance During and After Large Scale Incidents.

Live-Ins – We offer 10 private rooms that our members can move into and stay at the firehouse rent free. We provide Internet, Cable, Shared Private Bathrooms, Laundry Facilities, Commercial Kitchen Privileges and Gym Access. Live-Ins are required to be employed full time and or be a full time student and must provide 60 hours of On-Duty time per week.

SVFD Application Process

Candidates must complete the following to be considered for membership to the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department:

1. <PACKET> Obtain and fully complete a MEMBERSHIP PACKET and submit the packet in person to the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department.

2. <BACKGROUND CHECK> Pass a Virginia State Police Background Check. (No cost to applicant)

3. <DMV CHECK> Obtain and Submit a DMV Record for the state that the applicant is licensed in. (Virginia is $7 for this report)

4. <EDUCATION CHECK> Submit a Copy of your High School Diploma or GED Certificate.

5. <CERTIFICATION CHECK> Submit a Copy of your current Fire Certifications. (Optional depending on Application Request Type)

6. <RIDE-ALONG> Once you have completed the above you will be contacted by the department to take part in 24 hours of On-Duty time at the station. Your On-Duty time has to be performed between 0800 hrs – 2200 hrs. This Duty time allows members to get to know you and gives you insight of what to expect as a SVFD Firefighter.

7. <FIRST READING> Once all documentation has been submitted and your 24 hours at the station have been completed your application packet will go before the membership at our General Business Meeting. This is your "First Reading" and informs the membership of your intent to join the department.

8. <INTERVIEW> After your "First Reading" you will be contacted to be interviewed by a panel of SVFD Board of Directors, Line Officer and/or General Members.

9. <PANEL REVIEW> Your application packet and interview responses will be reviewed by the Applicant Interview Panel and they will make a recommendation to the General Membership regarding your application.

10. <SECOND READING> At the next General Business Meeting the membership will review and vote on your application to the department. This is your "Second Reading". We highly recommend that you attend this meeting. 

11. <PHYSICAL> After you are voted in you will be required to obtain a physical at the expense of the department.

12. <FINGERPRINTING> A fingerprint card is also required and will be placed on file with the Smithfield Police Department. No cost to applicant.

Ride Along Program

We also offer civilians the opportunity to be able to ride along with the fire department. This is a great opportunity to find out exactly what it’s like to be a Smithfield Firefighter first hand. Who knows? Maybe you’ll pick up an application after your visit.
