20th 2009 - Units were dispatched
for an accident reported to be auto vs. motorcycle. Engine 52 and Rescue
51 arrived to find one motorcyclist lying in the roadway surrounded with
by-standers and motorcycle lying nearby. Rescue 51 secured hazards, while
the engine assessed for injuries finding an obvious long bone fracture.
IWVRS arrived to assume medical care and advised they would need Nightingale for
transport. Engine 51 established the LZ.
Early Morning
Dumpster Fire
June
14th 2009 - Early Sunday morning at
08:40 Station 50 was toned out to a dumpster fire behind Bloom. Engine 52, 501,
and 512 arrived on scene to find a dumpster with heavy fire inside of it. Engine
52 pulled a hose line and filled the dumpster with foam.

While waiting for units to return
from the Barn Fire, crews standing by at Station 50 with Rescue 51 answered the
call for an MVA with 3 vehicles involved, one overturned, on Rt. 258 which was
called in by a SVFD member while on the way back from the fire. 501
arrived to find a patient self-extricated, laying in the roadway next to her
vehicle, with another vehicle overturned and laying precariously on top of it.
Engine 52 and Rescue 51 assisted St. 60 medics with patient care and loading.

While on scene investigating a
Fire Alarm on Vivian Dr., St. 50 Units were toned out for a Structure Fire on
Central Hill Rd, at 1600 Hrs. Chief Stallings (501) arrived on scene,
followed shortly by Engine 51, with smoke showing from the A side, with heavy
involvement on the rear of the structure, as well as a car inside of the barn
and a few flammable gas bottles also involved. Engine 51 and 501 began
knockdown, with crews from Engine 52, Engine 53, Engine 40, Tanker 40, arriving
to finish extinguishment and handling overhaul. Brush 51 handled a
lightning strike with a tree on fire while units worked the structure fire.

Units were dispatched in the early
hours for a vehicle into a ravine. Upon arrival, units found a vehicle on
its side in a ravine with occupants out of the vehicle. Engine 52 remained
on scene until the vehicle was recovered due to fuel leaking from the vehicle.
All occupants were uninjured in this accident.

Stations 50 & 60 were dispatch for
a vehicle into an outbuilding with driver unconscious inside the vehicle still.
Units arrived to find a vehicle into a building causing severe damage leaving a
power line on the vehicle. Community Electric was expedited to the scene
to remove power from the building. It appeared the driver had a medical
emergency causing the vehicle to leave the roadway. The driver was
pronounced on scene.

Units were dispatched for a two
vehicle MVA that was head-on in front of Smithfield High School. Engine 52
arrived to secure both vehicles and remove hazards. Both drivers were
transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Station 50 & 60 were toned out for
a 4 vehicle MVA in front of Farm Fresh. Upon arrival, one patient was in
the care of the medic, Engine 52 secured the vehicles, checked for injuries, and
contained fluids. One patient was transported to a local hospital.

Grain Engulfment

Initially, Station 60 was
dispatched for a person who had fallen in a grain elevator. The medic
responding upgraded the response as an industrial accident, adding Station 50 to
the assignment. Upon arrival, Engine 52 found one person fully engulfed in
wheat grain. After attempts to rescue the person by removing grain from
around them failed, all efforts were changed to a recovery mode to be as safe as
possible for rescuers. The best method for removing the grain was a grain
vacuum. Units operated for approx. 4 hours before the person was removed
from the silo. OSHA was on scene for the investigation.

Station 50 & 60 were dispatched
for an overturned tractor trailer loaded with an unknown material. Upon
arrival, the material was determined to be pelletized nitrogen. The driver
was flown out to Sentara Norfolk General via Nightingale due to ALOC. VDEM and
DEQ were notified of the spill of approx. 28 tons. Engine 52 and Rescue 51
contained the fluid spills from the tractor. The road remained closed for
the majority of the day, until clean-up crews could remove the mess left behind.

Station 50 & 60 were banged out
for an overturned vehicle with unknown injuries. Upon arrival, Engine 52
found a vehicle on its side, with no occupants in the area. Later, the
driver was located a few miles away on Turner Drive.

During the rush hour traffic,
Station 50 & 60 responded for a MVA at Rt. 10 & Berry Hill Rd. Upon
arrival, units found two patients with non-life threatening injuries.
Engine 52 and Rescue 51 worked to secure both of the vehicles and remove
hazards. One patient was transported by IWVRS to a local hospital.
