Fire w/ Trap - Lumar Road

While dinner plans were being
contemplated, Stations 50, 60, and 10 were banged out at approx. 1740 hrs. for a
structure fire with reported person still inside. Engine 52 (D. West)
advised central while enroute of the working fire due to the smoke seen in the
distance. 510 (B. Chapman) arrived to find a single story dwelling with
heavy smoke and flames showing from the roof. Engine 52 (Nickel-Deuce)
arrived and initiated fire attack and search with a 1 3/4 hand line with foam.
The fire was knocked down moments after entry and a search was started.
Seconds later, Engine 52's and Truck 51's crew found an unconscious male and
emergency traffic was broadcasted stating the victim was being brought to the
front door where Station 60 (IOWVRS) started patient care. The victim was
then airlifted to Norfolk General. The fire caused extensive damage to the
kitchen and spread into the attic. The structure had heat and smoke damage
throughout. The fire is currently being investigated by VA State Police.
Units on scene were Engine 52, Engine 53, Truck 51, Rescue 51, Brush 51, Support
50, Car 10, Quint 10, Medic 62, Zone 60, and Rehab 60. Units operated for
approx. three hours.

Just after finishing dinner,
Station 50 was paged out for a vehicle fire based on information from a third
party. 501 (J. Stallings) and Engine 52 responded w/ five. While
enroute, 501 upgraded the assignment based on information that the vehicle had
several exposures, which brought Station 30 (Rushmere). Upon arrival, 501
found a vehicle, which had been pulled away from the exposures, well involved.
Engine 52 arrived soon after 501 to extinguish the fire.
MVC - Wrenn's
Mill Road

At approx. 1740 hrs., Stations 50
& 60 were dispatched for an overturned vehicle. Upon arrival, 501 (J.
Stallings) advised of a two vehicle MVC with one on its side, and all patients
out of the vehicles. Engine 52 controlled hazards and stood-by until the
vehicle was up righted. Station 60 (IOWVRS) evaluated both patients and
obtained patient refusals.

Recently the department obtained a
surplus police cruiser from the Town of Smithfield. Over the past few
weeks, the prisoner partition and blue lights were removed, while red and white
lights were installed. Car 52 is expected to be placed in service in about
two weeks after lettering and striping are done. The vehicle was be used
by Assistant Chief Edwards as a command vehicle.

Burn - Pinehurst Drive

Just after returning from the
Franklin Expo, Station 50 was punched out for the brush fire on Pinehurst Dr.
Upon arrival 501 (J. Stallings) reported a large controlled burn behind the
residence. Due to EPA regulations regarding the size of controlled burns,
the fire was extinguished. Brush 51 attacked the fire, while Engine 53 &
Engine 52 provided water supply.
Franklin
Patriot Day Celebration

Truck 51 and Car 51 traveled down
to Franklin for the 5th Annual Patriot Day Celebration. All the apparatus
lined up for a parade in downtown Franklin and ended in the parking lot of
Wal-Mart, where units were judged and on display. The crew received 1st
Place Aerial, 2nd Place Special Unit, and Best Appearing Department. Great
job guys!
Brush Fire -
Fort Huger Dr.

Station 50 was banged out to
assist Station 30 (Rushmere VFD) with a reported brush fire @ 1245 hrs.
501 (J. Stallings) and B-51 w/ 2 marked up quickly to respond. While 501
was enroute, he note a large column of smoke in the area of the fire and
requested Tnk-10 (Carrollton VFD) and DOF (Dept. of Foresty) notified and also
switch to a TAC channel. 501 arrived to establish Rushmere command and
initial size-up was approx. 10 acres of cutover and young standing woods with
exposure concerns on the right flank. The incident was upgraded to include
Surry B-58, Dendron E-63 & B-66, and B-9 (Chuckatuck). Station 50 crews
remained on scene until approx. 1800 hrs. when the incident was downsized and
contained by a plow line by DOF, then turned over to Station 30 crews.
Total burn area was approx. 40 acres. The 50 House maintained an engine
crew in quarters for the duration of the incident. Units on scene were
501, B-51, E-52, E-53, B-30, E-32, E-31, Tnk-30 (Rushmere), Tnk-10 (Carrollton),
Tnk-40 (Windsor), A-20 (Carrsville), B-9 (Chuckatuck), B-58 (Surry), E-63 & B-66
(Dendron), M-62 and Rehab 60 (IWVRS).

Trailer Fire -
Smithfield Apt. Lane

Stations 50, 30, & 60 were
dispatched for the trailer fire with occupants reported out of the structure.
Engine 52, 53, 51 and the Rescue responded along with Tanker 30 and Medic 60.
E-52 arrived to find a single-wide trailer with smoke showing from the A side of
declared the working fire. 501 (J. Stallings) arrived and assumed the
command with E-52 advanced a line into the structure for fire attack. E-53
established water supply and the Rescue ventilated the structure and secured
utilities. The fire was placed under control quickly and overhaul done on
a small room and contents fire. Units returned to service shortly after.
Units on scene were 501, 502, E-52, E-53, E-51, R-51, Tnk-30 (Rushmere), M-60 (IWVRS)
with RE-10 backfilling the 50 House.
Boat Fire -
Jones Creek

Units from Station 10 & 50 were
dispatched for a boat on fire in Jones Creek, without an exact location.
While responding, 501 (J. Stallings) requested assistance from Smithfield PD for
their marine unit. Responding units found a 18' pleasure craft in the
water at a private boat house with fire showing. Crews from RE-10, B-51,
and SPD worked to overhaul and extinguish the fire. 103 (G. Rawls) had the
command and remaining Station 50 units were placed in service a short time
later. Responding were RE-10, B-51, E-51, E-52.

MVC - Route

Stations 50 & 60 were alerted at
1600 hours for an MVC w/ unknown injuries. 501 (J. Stallings) arrived on
scene to find a two vehicle MVC with moderate damage to both vehicles and all
occupants out of the vehicles. Upon arrival, Engine 52 and Rescue 51 took
blocking positions to protect the scene. Engine 52 checked for injuries,
while Rescue 51 secured the vehicles and removed hazards. Station 60
transported one patient to Obici for non-life threatening injuries.

Update - New Chief Vehicle

Finally, after spending about six
weeks at Tidewater Communications in Va. Beach, our new chief vehicle was placed
in-service the same afternoon upon delivery. The vehicle is a 2008 F-250
Superduty with 6.4L twin-turbocharged diesel power plant. The A.R.E. cap
covers an Extendo Bed slide-out carrying several incident management boards.
The vehicle features an all Whelen LED light package, 200W Powercall siren, two
dual-head radios w/ headsets, and soft-touch control pad.

Fire - South Church St.

Station 50 was dispatched for a
pick-up truck on fire at the intersection of S. Church St. and Red Point Dr.
501 (Stallings) arrived to find a pick-up truck with a fire in the engine
compartment. Engine 52 arrived and deployed a trash line for
extinguishment. Units operated for approx. 15 minutes before returning to
service.

Brush 51 and Engine 53 responded
for a brush fire between two residences. 502 (C. Edwards) arrived on scene
to find a small, slow moving brush fire, and advised the engine could downgrade
its response. Brush 51 arrived on scene and knocked the fire with its
booster line. Engine 53 was tasked with overhauling the area upon arrival.

Fire - Smithfield Packing Co.

At 1555 hrs., Station 50 was
alerted for an odor of smoke in the cafeteria of Smithfield Packing Co.
501 (J. Stallings) requested a full assignment while enroute. Upon
arrival, Engine 52 and 512 (Barlow) were assigned as the investigative group.
Truck 51 were assigned to make access to the roof. Engine 51 established a
water supply to Engine 52. Quint 10 (Carrollton) staged by Truck 51.
Upon investigation it was found that insulation was set on fire from welding in
the pork chop room. The contractors on scene had extinguished the fire
prior to arrival. Engine 52 opened the area up to ensure full
extinguishment. Units operated for 45 minutes before returning to service.

Fire - Carroll Bridge Road

At approx. 1640 hrs., Stations 50,
10 (Carrollton), and 60 (IOWVRS) were dispatched for the dwelling fire.
Due to comments on the call, 501 (Stallings) requested Tanker 9 (Chuckatuck) be
added to the assignment. 511 (M. Stallings) arrived minutes later
reporting a well involved single story dwelling. Upon the size-up, 501
asked for Tanker 40 (Windsor) be added to the assignment also. 501 arrived
to establish the command and ordered Engine 52 deploy a 2 1/2" handline for fire
attack. Engine 52 (Nickel-Deuce) and Engine 53 arrived simultaneously from
opposing directions. Each engine placed a 2 1/2" handline with class A
foam in service for fire attack. The fire was quickly knocked within
minutes by an aggressive interior attack. Tankers 9, 10, 40, and Engine 51
provided water supply. Station 60 provided rehab. Units operated for
2 1/2 hours before returning to service. Investigation conducted by VSP.

Fire - Bracey Circle

Stations 50 & 40 (Windsor VFD)
were dispatched for a mobile home fire on Bracey Circle (Windsor's 1st due).
Initial calls indicated that a child was on fire prior to a full structural
response being dispatched due to the residence also on fire. Due to the
burn injuries of the child, Nightingale was called to the scene for transport to
Norfolk General Burn Unit. Station 40 handled the fire, while Engine 53
(The War Wagon) handled LZ control. Check the news clips at

Vehicle into
Building - Wrenn Road

Approx. 1700 hrs, Station 50 units
responded for the vehicle into a structure. Units arrived to find
structural damage to an apartment building from an SUV. The SUV was
removed from the building prior to the arrival of Station 50 units. Both
upper and lower apartments were deemed unsafe for occupancy and IOW Codes and
Compliance was notified. There were no injuries.

After months of planning, the new
chief's vehicle is nearing completion. When Tidewater Communications
finishes their work, all that will be left to be do is, hopefully, just move the
chief's gear from the old car to the new one. The new vehicle is expected
to be in service by the end of July. Also, stayed tuned, there is another
chief's vehicle in the works...

Fire - Longview Drive

Station 50, Station 9
(Chuckatuck VFD), and Station 60 (Isle of Wight VRS) were dispatched to Longview
Dr. for the reported structure fire. Engine 52, Engine 53, Rescue 51,
Engine 9, Tanker 9, and Medic 62 marked up quickly for the run. Based on
comments from the dispatcher and being in an area without hydrants, 501 (Chief
Stallings) requested that Tanker 10 be added to the run. 504 (Captain O’Reilly)
marked on scene with a two story detached garage with smoke showing and marked
the incident a working fire. 501 arrived and established the command with
Engine 52 laying a 3” supply line on the way in. Crews placed a 1-3/4” bumper
line with foam in service to the interior for attack with Tanker 9 taking water
supply. Fire was knocked quickly and crews checked for extension. Engine 9
provided ventilation and RIT with Engine 53 giving the back-up line. All units
held for approximately one hour and returned to service.

Storage Drill

Station 50 personnel participated
in the annual RCS drill simulating the removal of a victim from a condenser on
the building's rooftop. As part of the scenario, the crew had to monitor
the atmosphere for the possibility of an ammonia leak. The drill is
conducted every year for insurance purposes of the company.

Shooting -
Carrollton Blvd.

Multiple shots rang out during
rush hour at Sonic on Carrollton Blvd. Upon arrival of Station 10 units,
they discovered two victims with multiple gunshot wounds. They immediately
asked for another medic from Station 60. Moments later, they were advised
of two more victims in the Eagle Harbor sub-division. This brought another
Station 60 medic and Suffolk Medic 9. Upon Nightingale being requested,
Station 50 was dispatched to provide an engine for the LZ. In all, two
patients were transported to Riverside, two transported to Norfolk General and
another patient, who wasn't shot, to Obici.
