23 Rescued by
50 House when Nor'easter Wrecks Havoc on
Isle of Wight County
 October
7th 2006 -
It all started around 0730 this morning with a
report of a house that was flooded on Great Springs Road. This turned into a
major incident and twelve people were rescued from multiple houses at
this scene. Some residents were rescued from their second story windows. During
this rescue operation, Station 10 (Carrollton VFD) responded to a lightning
strike to a residence in the Moonefield subdivision of town. While these two
incidents were being mitigated, we received word that there was flooding with
people trapped on Commerce Street by the Pagan River. Seven people and two animals
were rescued at these townhouses. Another report of flooding with people trapped
at Stallings Creek. Three people and one animal were rescued there. There were
reports of propane tanks floating down streets, venting gas. We even had caskets
unearthed and stuck in trees that were recovered by 50 house personnel. (Yes...
I said caskets) During the height of the flooding Station 50 was called out to
rescue a woman in labor who turned out to be no other than the wife of Brian
Carroll, Captain of Station 60. (Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad) We are
pleased to announce the birth of Susan and Brian's happy and healthy daughter.
(Congratulations!!!) Even the US Coast Guard was called in and SVFD FireFighter Doug
Darden was tasked with flying with the helicopter crew to perform an aerial
survey of the county. While he was airborne in "Air 50" they initiated a rescue
on Jonestown Road where a man was stranded with his vehicle in rising flood
waters. The Chesapeake Fire Department provided one of their "high water" trucks
(Truck 15)
to assist and the VMRC made their resources available to the department. The
local news channels reported 12 inches of rain, but residents in the area
reported as much as 16 inches in some locations. Except for a fire alarm
activation at Westside Elementary School, there wasn't anything routine about
today.
